For four years now the Palm Beach Theater Guild has fought a developer’s plans to demolish the Royal Poinciana Playhouse in Palm Beach, Florida. The Guild in conjunction with the town of Palm Beach --- and with the support of the National Trust for Historic Preservation --- has won a lawsuit to prevent condominiums and a condo hotel from being built. But the owner has sold to a new developer who also disdains maintaining our Palm Beach treasure – the town’s theater.
The Royal Poinciana Playhouse opened 50 years ago in 1958 and is approaching official landmark status. It was the first modern legitimate theater built in the United States for a quarter century before its opening. It was designed by noted South Florida architect John Volk in classic Regency architecture with an interior of very tasteful white, gold, and red. This unique theater under the palms has rightfully been called “The Most Fabulous Showplace Under the Sun”.
